Is the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program right for you?

A complete guide to eligibility, priority sectors, and the path to permanent residence in Alberta.

What is the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program?

The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) is the province’s economic immigration program. Operated under Alberta’s federal-provincial immigration agreement, it selects skilled workers and entrepreneurs aligned with the province’s labour market priorities. With 6,403 nominations for 2026, a 31 percent increase over the initial 2025 allocation, Alberta holds one of the largest provincial allocations in Canada.

For Express Entry-aligned applications, an AAIP nomination adds 600 points to your CRS score, virtually guaranteeing an Invitation to Apply in the next federal draw. Provincial processing typically takes 3 to 6 months. Federal processing takes approximately 7 months for Express Entry aligned applications, or about 13 months for base PNP.

Important advantage: AAIP nominations issued to practice ready physicians (NOC 31100, 31101, or 31102) and Francophones meeting CLB/NCLC level 5 in French across all four competencies do not count toward Alberta’s 6,403 allocation. These nominations draw from a separate federal pool of 10,000 spaces shared across all provincial nominee programs, opening additional capacity for qualifying physicians and French speakers.

Who qualifies?

Eligibility depends on the specific stream you apply under. Across most AAIP worker streams, candidates must meet these baseline requirements.

01

Job offer or Alberta connection

Most worker streams require a full-time job offer from an eligible Alberta employer. Some streams accept candidates already working in Alberta on a valid temporary work permit, while the Rural Renewal Stream requires a community endorsement letter in addition to the job offer.

02

Work experience

Each stream defines its own minimum experience requirements. The Alberta Opportunity Stream is uniquely broad among Canadian PNPs, accepting NOC TEER 0 through 5 occupations. Other streams target specific TEER levels and priority sectors.

03

Language proficiency

Minimum language requirements vary by stream and occupation. Most streams require CLB 5 in English or French; the Express Entry-aligned pathways require CLB 7 in line with federal standards. Proven with approved tests: IELTS, CELPIP, TEF, or TCF.

04

Education and settlement funds

A diploma or degree relevant to the offered occupation, validated through an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) for foreign credentials. Proof of funds to support yourself and accompanying family upon arrival in Alberta.

Applicants must also intend to live and work in Alberta, be admissible to Canada, and pass medical and security checks.

The main AAIP streams

AAIP operates eight streams across worker and entrepreneur categories. These five worker streams account for the vast majority of nominations issued each year.

Alberta Opportunity Stream

The largest AAIP stream and the primary pathway for foreign workers already living and working in Alberta on a valid temporary work permit. Accepts NOC TEER 0 through 5 — broader than most provincial programs in Canada — with a focus on candidates working in priority sectors.

Alberta Express Entry — Accelerated Tech Pathway

For technology workers with an Alberta job offer who have an active Express Entry profile. Targeted draws issue invitations to candidates whose occupations align with Alberta’s tech sector priorities. Adds 600 CRS points upon nomination.

Alberta Express Entry — Dedicated Health Care Pathway

For physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals with an Express Entry profile and Alberta employment. Practice-ready physicians (NOC 31100, 31101, 31102) draw from the separate federal allocation that does not count toward the 6,403 cap.

Alberta Express Entry — Priority Sector Draws

For Express Entry candidates with experience in construction, manufacturing, agriculture, or aviation. Targeted draws issue invitations to candidates whose occupations align with Alberta’s labour market priorities.

Rural Renewal Stream

For candidates with a job offer in one of Alberta’s designated rural communities. Requires a community endorsement letter in addition to the job offer. Lower competition than urban-focused streams, with 1,000 dedicated nominations for 2026.

Additional pathways include the Tourism and Hospitality Stream, the Rural Entrepreneur Stream, the Farm Stream, the Graduate Entrepreneur Stream, and the Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur Stream. Eligibility for each is detailed during a personalized assessment.

The application process

Most AAIP worker streams follow a four-stage process through the AAIP online portal.

01

Worker Expression of Interest

Submit a Worker Expression of Interest (WEOI) through the AAIP portal. As of April 7, 2026, submission requires a 135 dollar non-refundable fee. Profiles are scored on a points grid based on factors including job offer, work experience, education, language, and Alberta connection. The WEOI remains valid in the pool for 12 months.

02

Invitation to Apply

AAIP runs targeted draws aligned with Alberta’s labour market priorities. Highest-ranking WEOI candidates receive an Invitation to Apply. You then have 90 calendar days to submit a complete application and pay the 1,500 dollar application fee.

03

Provincial nomination

AAIP reviews your application against the eligibility criteria. Provincial processing typically takes 3 to 6 months. If approved, you receive a Confirmation of Nomination, which authorizes you to apply to IRCC for permanent residence.

04

Federal permanent residence

With the nomination, apply to IRCC for permanent residence. Express Entry-aligned applications process in approximately 7 months thanks to the 600 CRS boost. Base PNP applications take approximately 13 months and cover medical, security, and admissibility checks.

Why hire an RCIC?

Under Canadian law, only Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultants (RCICs), lawyers, and Québec notaries are authorized to represent applicants before IRCC and provincial immigration authorities. Any other paid representation is unauthorized and puts the application at risk.

A licensed RCIC is accountable to the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants (CICC), bound by a strict code of professional conduct, and trained in current immigration law. For Alberta applications specifically, this means accurate WEOI scoring, correct stream selection, employer eligibility verification, and timely filing within the 90-day application window.

Megrez Immigration Consultants has operated as a licensed RCIC firm in Vancouver since 1996. Every Alberta immigration file at the firm is structured, reviewed, and submitted under direct RCIC supervision.
